Business perspective Column

Bhavini Kalaria is a solicitor and head of a north London-based commercial law firm, The London Law Practice. She trained in the City and worked in a top Legal 100 practice before starting her own business. She is a keen supporter of local businesses and makes it a point to shop locally. She went to school in Moss Hall, Finchley, has lived in and around north London for the past 15 years and follows local events keenly. Bhavini is the mother of a three-year-old and when she is not working or spending time with her son, she is an avid reader and a member of Toastmasters. She also writes for a community paper and appears on a local radio station from time to time.

Environment matters Column

Vicki Pite is a science teacher and adviser. After reading the Brandt report: North South, A Question Of Survival about sustainable global development in the 1980s, she has tried to think globally while acting locally. As a local authority officer she managed an environmental centre, worked alongside schools in developing their grounds and their recycling policies, and ran some of the first ever young people’s conferences and parliaments about the environment. A veteran cyclist, Vicki hung up her pedals because she feels too many London drivers are inconsiderate of cyclists and cycle lanes don’t help. She now walks, uses London transport and drives a tiny car. Although she admits her gardening owes more to enthusiasm than skill, she has an Enfield In Bloom Award for her front garden allotment. She also raises funds for Unicef.

I’D like to start my first column by recalling the old saying: “Give a person a fish and they’ll eat for a day; teach a person to fish and they’ll feed for a lifetime.
