500 teachers hit by council computer error

MORE than 200 teachers in Barnet are owed a refund after a computer error led to them paying extra pension contributions in their pay packets.

Barnet Council’s Labour Group has now called for a review of the IT systems used by the council – after a different computer problem earlier this month meant that library users were unable to renew books.

Meanwhile, more than 300 other teachers paid around £60 less in pension contributions than they should have done.

A Barnet Council spokeswoman said the software issue was not specific to Barnet and had also affected teachers outside the borough. She said a routine payroll audit had discovered the error, which occurred between April and August last year, but that the issue had now been resolved.

She said: “All head teachers have been advised and affected staff are being communicated with. There will be no impact on their pensions.”

Both overpayments and underpayments will be collected through the pension contribution element in forthcoming pay packets.
